Goal Halt progression, protect the optic nerve

Glaucoma is a condition of the human eye where the optic nerve — the nerve that carries visual signals from the eye to the brain — gets damaged due to excessive pressure within the eye. Since the optic nerve is the primary carrier of visual information to the brain, damage to it can lead to significant loss of vision. Glaucoma usually affects both eyes, though the pressure within each eye can be different.

Glaucoma — What Are the Symptoms?

Typically, there are no early symptoms associated with glaucoma. It's always safe to have your eyes checked annually to make sure they're healthy — glaucoma can silently progress without your knowledge, and total vision loss can be just around the corner if it's left untreated. This is precisely why, whenever you visit an eye doctor, they check the pressure within your eyes to rule out glaucoma. Most glaucoma patients, however, visit a doctor because of one or more of the following symptoms:

Warning Signs to Watch For

  • Frequent changes of glasses, particularly for near work, with none being fully satisfactory
  • Rainbow-coloured rings around lights (seeing halos)
  • Blurred or foggy vision
  • Loss of side (peripheral) vision
  • Redness of the eyes

Get Treated, Before It's Too Late

Glaucoma can be treated with medication or surgery. Medication usually involves eye drops to reduce the secretion of fluid (aqueous humor) inside the eye. Surgery helps open blockages in the drainage pathway to improve fluid outflow — this can be performed via a procedure called Trabeculectomy (TRAB) or using a laser. Vista Eye Care is among the best clinics for Glaucoma treatment in Delhi, and Dr. Aman Malik is considered one of the best surgeons for Glaucoma surgery in Delhi.

FAQs About Glaucoma

Glaucoma is often symptomless in early stages ("silent thief of sight"). Warning signs in advanced stages include gradual peripheral vision loss, eye pain, blurred vision and halos around lights. Regular eye pressure checks are the best defence.
